SENTENCE OF MODALS

·   Function of modals

A.      Can / could
The functions of can / could are:
1.       To express the ability
2.       To state the possibility
3.        To declare permission
B.      Must / have to
The functions of must / have to / has to / had to are:
1.       To state the necessity
2.       To state certainty
3.       To address the needs
C.      Will / would
The functions of will / would are:
1.       Used to express a plan (plan)
2.       Used to express willingness
3.       Used to express the prediction (prediction)
4.       Used to express a plan in the past (plan)
5.       Used to express a polite plea
D.      Shall / should / ought to
The functions of shall / should / ought to are:
1. to state the suggestion
2. to state what is right or right

·   Difference of modals

1.       Can-Could Difference
Can be used to declare the ability whereas could be used to express the ability but in the past.

2.       The Must-have Difference to
Must be used when someone decides that it is necessary to do something, usually used in situations where the important thing is happening and requires quick action. While having to have to when someone is talking about the need to do something that is generally the responsibility of everyday.

3.       Differences will-would
In expressing allegations or predictions we can use the word will and would. The difference between the two is that the word "Will" is used to predict the future (simple future tense), while the word "Would" is also used to predict the future but based on past perspectives or past perspectives.

4.       Difference shall-should-ought to
Shall in the future tense sentence can be replaced with will, while should in a sentence that indicates a (suggestions) must be replaced with shall or ought to.


·   EXAMPLE
1.       Can-Could
-    Can i borrow your book?
-    I could eat the noodle more faster than you yesterday.
2.       Must-Have to
-    We must go on
-    i have to go to jakarta soon to meet my family
3.       will-would
-    i will go to campus
-    would you like to see my key?
4.       Shall-should
-    I shall visit my mother  tomorrow
-    You should stop smoking because it's not good for your health
